MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY IS CLASSIFIED BY THE CARNEGIE FOUNDATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF TEACHING AS A DOCTORAL RESEARCH PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTION. IT HAS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN HIGHER EDUCATION IN BALTIMORE AND MARYLAND FOR MORE THAN 130 YEARS, SERVING THE COMMUNITY WITH DISTINCTION WHILE MEETING THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF AN INCREASINGLY DIVERSE SOCIETY.
A historically black institution, Morgan serves students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. Its mission today is to enroll a student body diverse in its socioeconomic and academic status and to provide the full range of experiences those students need to achieve the full range of their goals. Morgan offers a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum with more specialized programs at the master's and doctoral levels. The university has traditionally placed strong emphasis on the arts and sciences at the undergraduate level and on preparing students for advanced study. In addition, it offers a variety of programs in professional fields, including engineering, business, teacher education, architecture, hospitality management, public health and social work.
Morgan attracts its approximately 6,500 students from every state and many foreign countries. About 35 percent of its student body hails from outside Maryland. It is one of the leading institutions nationally in the number of applications it receives from African American high school students, and among the nation's top producers of Fulbright Scholars. An above-average percentage of Morgan graduates go on to attend graduate and professional schools.
Located in a residential area of northeast Baltimore, Morgan puts both the city and its suburbs within easy reach of its students. Its designation as Maryland's Public Urban University will ensure its prominence in Maryland education for years to come.
