Why Auni Likes Her School So Much

"All of my Anthropology classes have been stellar."

Goucher's department is small but mighty!

"I love walking in Goucher's wooded trail surrounding campus."

It's a great way to take a break from the buzz of campus life.

"I have several on-campus jobs and serve as an Ambassador to prospective students."

I was the Managing Editor of the student newspaper, The Quindecim, in the fall.  I helped launch the Goucher Suicide Awareness & Prevention group, which is still going strong.  I do community service through our club, CAUSE, and try to do yoga when I can.  I am also involved in the Student Alumnae/i Association and the Sociology & Anthropology Club. I'll also be studying abroad in Copenhagen Denmark this spring!

"I went swing dancing at Johns Hopkins and had a great time."

I use the Eisenhower library at Hopkins for more extensive research projects.  I'd really like to go to more events and lectures at the other schools, but haven't had a chance yet.  I'd also like to take a class at MICA before I graduate.

Why Auni Likes Going to School in Baltimore

"I have been pleasantly surprised with almost everything I've found in Baltimore."

It's about as far as possible from my hometown of Seattle.  Seattle's great, but it's really exciting to get to know a city on your own.

"Baltimore's very accessible to young adults and is a great place to study."

The suburbs are great for raising a family, but I think living in or near a big city is ideal for young adults and college students.  I love going downtown to go to museums, festivals and concerts, to do research, to eat out, and to visit friends. The city is such a nice contrast from campus life in Baltimore County

"The creativity emerging in Baltimore right now is really exciting."

There are so many unique yet impressive artists and musicians who are really pouring their hearts into the arts scene here.  It's thrilling to witness and experience this growing movement.

"The Inner Harbor is fine, but there is so much more to the city than that."

If you're not used to public transportation, definitely take advantage of that.  The Light Rail is very convenient for students without a car. Learn to venture outside your comfort zone (safely).  Taking the #8 bus route all the way down Greenmount Avenue is a great way to see more than the tourist's view of Baltimore; walking around different neighborhoods is another interesting way to explore.  Check out Baltimore's many festivals and opportunities for free stuff.  Immerse yourself in Baltimore's thriving arts scene.

"I would definitely recommend coming to school in Baltimore"

I have to admit it's not a place I thought about a whole lot before coming here, especially growing up on the West Coast, but I have been really impressed by all that's going on here.  I am hoping to stay here at least for a few years after graduation.

"There is a healthy arts scene that continues to expand."

It seems to be a hotspot for creativity, both historically and today.

"I'm constantly impressed by both the generosity and the creativity of the Baltimoreans I've met."

I've really enjoyed exploring this city as an independent adult (i.e. not growing up here) and getting involved in what I'm passionate about- the arts.
