History

The Baltimore Collegetown Network brings area colleges and universities – public, private, large, and small – together into a consortium that benefits each institution and the region as a whole.  More than 120,000 students attend college here, but many come in spite of Baltimore, not because of it.  We are working together to articulate the message that Baltimore is a great college town and to create programs that strengthen that claim.  Collegetown began as a grassroots effort in the late 1990s, was officially incorporated in 1999, and received 501c3 status in 2001.  We develop projects and partnerships that attract, engage, and retain students, raise the profile of Baltimore as a college destination, and help colleges share resources.

Our primary programs include:

Academic partnerships: including class exchange agreements, library reciprocal borrowing privileges, and administrative cost sharing and networking groups.

Transportation: the Collegetown Shuttle now carries more than 80,000 riders a year between six campuses and several area destinations (it launched in 1999 with 12,000 riders).

Marketing:  a major marketing campaign launched in 2003 to position Baltimore as a vibrant and welcoming city for college students. Campaign elements include a dynamic website and hundreds of thousands of publications now in circulation telling prospective and current students, parents, guidance counselors, and others about Baltimore and its colleges and universities.

Research Studies: Collegetown publishes research studies including a first-of-its-kind economic impact study for higher education last year and student perception studies every three years.

Engagement Programs: a variety of engagement programs encourage students to get involved in the region, including community service days, service-learning conferences, internships (via our online internship board), half-price tickets to art and culture, college nights, neighborhood tours, leadership workshops, intramural tournaments, and small grants to encourage student groups to reach out to each other and the community.

Collegetown LeaderShape: this new program launched in 2010 to help connect students across campuses and with their communities to make a better Baltimore. Designed for students who have a passion for service and leadership, it starts with a week of leadership development and is followed by support for a year to help students not just develop visions, but learn to be visionary.
