Why the internship was successful.
In the summer before her senior year, Laura worked as an intern for Atradius Trade Credit Insurance, Inc as an assistant underwriter. The Villa Julie Career HQ referred her to the position. Through this internship experience Laura now works a full-time position at Atradius as a Claims-Handler.
Despite keeping an impressively packed schedule, Laura continued working as an intern during the school year.
“The Claims Department was looking for part time help so I decided to take that position and continue working at Atradius while still attending school. I figured working in a different department would only broaden my view of the business world. I had scheduled all my classes for Tuesdays and Thursdays so it worked out perfectly for me to work as an Administrative Assistant for the Claims Department on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays. I also played Division III soccer and lacrosse for VJC so my schedule was always busy. I felt that this helped me learn to take on a lot of responsibility and balance a busy schedule.”
Laura says that she valued the experience she gained working in an internship program and that hands on experience gave her a better career perspective than things she learned in a classroom.
“I had no idea what I wanted to do with my degree once I graduated. By participating in this internship, my eyes were opened to a company and environment that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. I think it is very important for all students to participate in an internship program and I would recommend it to all college juniors and seniors. I feel that I would have been lost going into the working world without any experience under my belt. Internships definitely get your foot in the door!!!”
Laura is a great example of the benefits internship positions can hold, as she admittedly might not have known what she wanted to do, had she not had this valuable experience.
