Why the internship was successful.

This summer Tianna completed an internship with Black Entertainment Television (BET) in Washington, D.C. where she worked for the Marketing and Promotions Department. This opportunity gave her the chance to learn more than she ever expected about this form of business. She considers her time spent at BET and all the effort she put into her work well worth it as she was able to learn not only information about television entertainment and media but about herself as well. This experience also helped her with future plans as she realize that she would one day like to work for either a PR firm, advertising company or entertainment company such as BET or MTV.
In 8 short weeks, her summer internship at BET taught her a lot about life in corporate America. It was a real eye-opener for Tianna where she learned that much of the key to anyone’s success is networking. The expression was used so often at BET that, “It’s not what you know but who you know” that she realized it’s actually the truth. Tianna fully expects that the influential people she met while interning will one day be instrumental to her career.
BET presented Tianna with countless opportunities that extended beyond the academic realm. She learned how to live in a big political city and navigate public transportation. She learned that she can exceed expectations and how to implement her ideas. She learned how to create a budget with limited financial resources and how to effectively network with influential individuals. For Tianna, however, there was one opportunity in particular that she found the best of all. “But maybe the most important thing of all was that I learned how to step out of the protective Goucher bubble and into the real world,” she explains.
Tianna’s internship allowed her to meet wonderful people who she remains in contact with and gave her experience in her career field. Her internship was so successful that BET has asked her to come back and complete another internship this winter.
