HAMPTON NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
Built in the late 1700s by Captain Charles Ridgely, the Hampton Mansion was once the largest house in America. Now a historic site where you can explore the history and culture of the 18th and 19th centuries -- including the stories of the slaves and indentured servants who once toiled here -- the Hampton offers tours of the breathtaking Georgian-style home and outlying gardens.
The mansion itself is closed in 2005 for installation of a fire suppression system; but the rest of the estate remains open with regular educational programs.
