KINGS DOMINION

This sprawling Paramount Studios-owned theme park near Richmond, VA, doesn't tiptoe around its intentions: Among its many thrill rides are contraptions called the Berserker, the Hurler, or you can take a splash in the Waterworks water park. Other attractions include the Drop Zone Stunt Tower, promising riders a 272-foot free fall at speeds up to 75 miles per hour; Volcano, the Blast Coaster, which shoots you out of -- you guessed it -- a volcano while you hang from cars suspended underneath the track; and the Hypersonic XLC, the only compressed-air-launch coaster in the U.S. On hot summer days, you can cool down on the many twisting slides in Kings Dominion's water park or take a breather at one of the Nickelodoen-themed shows the park presents daily.

The lines can get pretty long on the weekends and especially on holidays, so if you can knock off for a weekday and head down then, that's probably your best bet. Buying tickets online will save you some cash or you can always pick up a coupon at your local Giant to save on the admission.
