FORT MCHENRY NATIONAL MONUMENT AND HISTORIC SHRINE

Except on the Fourth of July, you're not likely to see rockets' red glare or bombs bursting in air over Fort McHenry these days, but during the pivotal Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812, that very sight inspired Francis Scott Key to put pen to parchment and write the words that would become the United States national anthem. An active military post off-and-on for the following 100 years, Fort McHenry is now a historic site where you can relive the perilous fight over which the Star-Spangled Banner's broad stripes and bright stars so gallantly streamed.
