PETE'S GRILLE

It's only open for breakfast and lunch, and there's almost always a wait, but Pete's serves up its eggs, burgers, BLTs, and coffee with such good-natured charm that it would take a hard heart not to fall in love with the place. The way it works is: You stand by the windows and wait. When there are enough seats open at the counter for you and your gang, you sit. You order either from Lou, the owner and sole chef (we're not sure where the name came from), or his wife, Char, depending upon where you're sitting. They smile and chat you up and refill your cup before it's empty -- before it even has a chance to cool down, really -- and then, a few minutes later, your food arrives, fresh, hot, and delicious. You'll get good at this, because if you stop at Pete's once, you're almost sure to become a regular.
