KALI'S COURT/MEZZE

The upscale, Mediterranean-influenced Kali's Court and Mezze, its slightly less formal tapas lounge next door, should be sure-fire winners. They're ideally located on the romantic cobblestone streets of Fells Point's main drag. Kali's Court boasts two lush, greenery-trimmed dining rooms upstairs and downstairs and a candlelit courtyard behind a wrought-iron fence out front, and Mezze is sleek, minimalist, and modern in all the ways you want a tapas lounge to be. So why do we always find ourselves just a little disappointed when we eat at either one? Perhaps it's the service, which is always colored with an unmistakable tinge of condescension. Perhaps it's the food itself, which contents itself to satisfy decidedly unadventurous expectations. Most likely, though, it's that it costs just as much to be treated poorly and to eat unsatisfyingly here as it would to have a much better time at the Black Olive or Pazo, both just a short walk away -- which we recommend taking.

"I really disagree with this review of Mezze. I've been here several times and the service and food has been phenomenal each and every time. I've also eaten at The Black Olive and Pazo, both are very nice also, but I would prefer Mezze any day of the week."

"I, also, disagree with this review. Not only is Mezze more reasonable than Black Olive and Pazo ($$$!), the food is better. Every dish you eat explodes with complex mouth-watering flavors. Sure, the waiters and cloth tablecloths seem a bit formal, but professional, too. It is always a treat to eat at Mezze."

I agree with the "tinge of condescension" comment. The staff was unwelcoming and our waiter was rude.

All of the plates came at once before we were even served drinks. He never checked on our table and brought us the bill before we finished.

The food was fine, but the experience made me wish I had spent my birthday elsewhere.
