Good jazz is hard to find amid the snooze-inducing “smooth ‘jazz'” that too often passes for the real deal these days; good live jazz is even harder to ferret out. Fortunately, Baltimore has its very own haunt for true believers in the New Haven, a Morgan State-area club where Coltrane is king and Kenny G the punchline to a joke. The New Haven occasionally brings in a name act like Joshua Redman or Cyrus Chestnut, but on most nights you'll find local cats blowing. There's never a cover no matter what the show, but call ahead to see whether it's an all-ages night before you make the trip if you're not yet 21.
