HIGHLANDTOWN

As you may expect, much of the food to be found here is simple, sturdy, and steeped in deep ethnic traditions; Matthew's Pizza, Samos, Ikaros, and Santoni's are all Highlandtown highlights. Its culture is shaped in equal measure by similar traditions (check out the Greek Independence Day celebrations in March) and by the artists and hipsters who have found in Highlandtown's low rents an ideal place to start their own scene (of which the Creative Alliance, housed in the historic Patterson Theatre, is the cornerstone). On the neighborhood's western edge sits the sprawling Patterson Park, featuring tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and a domed ice skating rink for the winter months.
