BOLTON HILL

The neighborhood's proximity to MICA, UB, and Coppin State accounts for much of its youthful energy, while venerable Baltimore institutions like the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall (home of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra) and the Lyric Opera House bring a wide range of musical and theatrical events to the area throughout the year.

Bolton Hill boasts a variety of delightful places to eat and hang out regardless of whether you're on the budget of a starving artist (try On the Hill for their sandwiches) or a powerful art dealer (The b is a great bistro with a mix of gourmet and cheapy favorites). The Mount Royal Tavern and Café Doris are good places to mingle with budding Warhols and Rauschenbergs from the area. And Artscape, an annual summer event organized in part by MICA, draws people in droves to check out the work of both students and established artists and artisans -- and live performances by the likes of Isaac Hayes, De La Soul, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

Bolton Hill's artistic roots run deep. It was home to the Cone sisters -- and their world-famous collection of works by Matisse, Picasso and others (now on permanent display at the Baltimore Museum of Art) -- at the beginning of the 20th Century. F. Scott Fitzgerald lived here too. The neighborhood is now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, thanks in part to its elegant 19th-century architecture.
