CHARLES VILLAGE

The rents are reasonable, the streets are reasonably quiet, and with the Baltimore Museum of Art in the neighborhood and a healthy-and-growing number of restaurants and shops scattered around the main square, there's usually something fun and interesting happening just a short walk away.

Most of Charles Village's restaurants, shops, and bars are clustered right around the Hopkins campus. The dining options are inexpensive and diverse, including the Middle Eastern dishes of Silk Road, Asian-style noodles at Niwana, and an overwhelming combination of delicious classics at Tamber's. The Charles Village Pub serves up decent burgers, sandwiches, and fish and chips, and for vegetarians, there's the One World Café. The latter also boasts a great coffee bar -- one of three in the neighborhood, including also Donna's and Xando.

Shopping opportunities are sparse in Charles Village, but there is a Record & Tape Traders in the area (which, despite its name, mostly sells CDs) and a great indie video-rental shop called Video Americain. As for nightlife, the Charles Village Pub attracts most of the college crowd while hipsters head to the Ottobar for live music, DJs, and special events like the monthly Britpop dance night.
