MOUNT VERNON

If you're looking for a little diversity in your diet, Mount Vernon is a great place to find it. Dining-out options in the neighborhood range include the Afghan delights of the Helmand, outstanding sushi at XS, scorching Thai dishes at Thai Landing, nouveau Eastern European cuisine at the Brewer's Art, and the tiny Mediterranean tastes of Tapas Teatro.

The area really comes to life at night, as an eclectic crowd of hip urbanites hits Mount Vernon's slew of popular bars and nightclubs, including the loungey Spy Club, Red Maple, and Club Charles and the hip hop mecca Choices. Clustered around Eager Street, there's a sizable contingent of gay and gay-friendly bars, including Central Station and an outrageously fun dance club called the Hippo.

Of course, there's plenty to do around Mount Vernon during the day, too. The outstanding Walters Art Museum is the centerpiece of a museum and gallery district that also includes the Contemporary Museum, the Maryland Historical Society, the Baltimore Museum of Art and many art galleries and boutique-style shops. The Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and the Lyric Opera House are just up the street, and the Sidebar and Talking Head rock clubs are a few blocks south.
