MOUNT WASHINGTON

For lunch, try the Stone Mill Bakery; for a cup of coffee, the popular Urban Grounds. Loco Hombre serves up decent Mexican dishes and Alonso's has the most unconscionably huge burgers you'll ever see. If you're more inclined to stay in and cook for yourself, you're in luck -- the area is home to Whole Foods and local favorite Eddie's of Roland Park, two of the best grocery stores in town.

Shopping opportunities in these neighborhoods are limited, and boutique-style stores like Something Else, Smith & Hawken, and the shops in the Village of Cross Keys cater mainly to folks with a good bit of change to spare. But the area is not without its edgy and artsy side -- the DIY pottery shops Clayworks and Amazing Glaze both make their homes here, as does the larger of the city's two Video Americain rental shops.
