OWL BAR

Way before the Brewer's Art became the cool place to hang out in Mount Vernon, the Owl Bar defined cool in that part of town. Located since 1900 on the ground floor of the opulent Belvedere Hotel, it went through Prohibition as a speakeasy. (Cool bar trivia: The lights in the eyes of the owl statues that watch over the bar here used to blink to warn patrons when the place was being raided by federal agents.) These days, its clientele is a lot less surreptitious and probably a little less stylish as well, but it's still a classy joint, and a decent second choice if you can't get a table at Brewer's and don't feel like being jostled by the crowd.
