THE HIPPO

A couple years back, the Baltimore City Paper jokingly threatened to retire the "Gay Bar" category in its Best of Baltimore issue because the Hippo had claimed the title so many times. There's a good reason for that: It's very possibly the best time you can have on a dance floor in this town. It's always packed, and clubgoers take advantage of every inch of available space, from the dance floor to the gigantic speakers that line it to the bar, to get up and move. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming to all, and some of its special events (particularly its fashion shows and its hysterical Wednesday Bingo Nights) must be seen to be believed.
